Question by ES: Does medication actually help with an anxiety disorder?
I was recently diagnosed with an anxiety disorder but I'm afraid to take any medicine for it if the medicine is not absolutely necessary. The reason is I also have ADHD and I was taking ritalin for a while, but I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster (feeling amazing when it was working and then getting depressed and paranoid over the stupidest things at the end of the day when I came down from 'high' you get) and became suicidal until I stopped taking the medicine. The suicidal thoughts were absolutely because of the medication because those thoughts are not like me at all.

Even though the meds for anxiety disorders may be different, I don't want anything to mess with my emotions because I don't think I can handle that any more. Even when I'm happy, it's bittersweet because I know that the feeling will go away again. For those of you who have taken medications for an anxiety disorder, what did you feel? Did it make you feel calmer and more yourself, or did it numb you to an extent so that you didn't feel normal?

I've also been doing yoga and pilates, eating healthier and anything else to naturally reduce stress and anxiety but I'm curious about the medication and its side effects.

Best answer:
stress causes anxiety.
