Question by Mariana D: yoga question really short?
ok so i am taking yoga classes but i wanted to know what other classes are like yoga thats from hinduism or buddhism or any religion and its about growing more spiritually and well i just need to know what other practices do nreligions do
Best answer:
The goal of yoga is to merge with the Divine, which is "all that is", including your own true nature which is a spark of the Divine. The word itself, "yoga" means to yoke together ... your soul and the Divine. This is done primarily through meditation, but it also includes many other disciplines:
- Raja yoga, primarily the meditation (different types of meditation techniques will be given their own names, such as "Kriya yoga", but fall under the "Raja yoga" designation).
- Bhakti yoga, the practice of devotion
- Jnana yoga, the practice of mental discrimination
- Karma yoga, the practice of fulfilling one's duty without attachment to results
- Hatha yoga, the physical discipline (which is what most Westerners think is all of yoga)
If you are interested in pursuing yoga as a spiritual practice I would recommend finding a teacher, or taking correspondence lessons from an organization such as Self-Realization Fellowship.
The goal of Buddhism is to stop suffering through the retraining of the mind. It is not religious or devotional, although much of that has been overlaid onto the basic practices of Buddhism. Nonetheless, the belief that there is no higher power than can help you achieve enlightenment is one of the basic beliefs in Buddhism ... therefore belief in God is not relevant to Buddhism. Because it does not address the issue of whether or not God exists, both theists and atheists can practice Buddhism.
If you are interested in pursuing Buddhism as a spiritual practice, I would recommend that you visit a dharma center near you.
http://www.dharmanet.org/listings/u and begin taking lessons.
Both yoga (derived from Hinduism) and Buddhism teach rebirth and karma and self-transformation, but the styles ... and the goals themselves ... are very different.
