Can you teach yourself yoga by DVD or book?

Question by David K: Can you teach yourself yoga by DVD or book?
I am wanting to learn to practice yoga on a daily basis, Im just wondering if it is something you can teach yourself from a DVD or a book? I was told that something like QiGong or Tai Chi should only be taught by an instructor, that way no bad habits are formed, is yoga the same way, or is it safe to practice on your own?

Best answer:
There are different types of yoga, I think you are talking about Hatha yoga (physical yoga), for healthy body. You can learn yoga with a dvd/ book but the effectiveness of that taught by a guru (teacher) will be missing. Always learn from a trained instructor as it is not safe to try all postures if you have any ailments. An instructor will teach you the breathing pattern and postures which are the essence of Hatha yoga.
