Question by googoodollsss: I hurt my lower back in yoga over a month ago and I didn't really go to the doctor. Now my right legs hurts!
I can walk but I can't run, walk, jump like I used to because my lower back has a sudden striking pain. I used to be able to sit in a chair for long periods of time and now I am noticing that the pain is radiating to my right leg. Also, if I lean on my right leg for a long time while standing the pain radiate there too. Am I going to be paralyzed, will I die? I can't afford anymore hospital bills I'm only 24 and don't want to be in debt!!
Best answer:
Don't worry, you won't die or become paralyzed. It sounds as if you have a slightly herniated disc. The disc is pressing on your spinal nerve. It's a very common ailment and fairly easy to treat, especially given your young age. Sometimes, it even resolves on its own (but that could take months). Most doctors will advise you to try physiotherapy. It's very effective in most people if done consistently. They will also give you an infusion for the pain along with physiotherapy. The other option is surgery. However, most doctors will hesitate to operate you before physiotherapy hasn't been tried.
It can get worse, but it's doubtful since you're still very young. No reason to be alarmed about this. However, if you start to lose control over your bladder function or bowel movements, or can't move your legs anymore, it's an absolute emergency and you MUST go see a doctor! This means that the disc has slipped further and is compressing almost the entire spinal nerve. But this is an uncommon complication and tends to happen to older people.
Don't worry. I had the same thing as you, and it spontaneously resolved itself. But since you're in great pain, go see your primary care physician. I recommend that you also go see a physiotherapist instead of looking up exercises on the internet. When a disc slips, it can affect multiple nerves and isn't the same from patient to patient. To get effective, customized treatment, I suggest you do go to a doctor about this.
