Question by keeidy2: What diet and exercise plan would be best for me?
I'm 16 years old and about to enter my Junior year of high school. All through Junior High, I was a cheerleader and extremely active, but when Sophomore year started, my classes became extremely difficult to keep up with and my dance teacher quit her job to work somewhere else. So I became somewhat of an inactive teenager. At the beginning of the year, I weighed about 140, and I gained about 15 pounds during the year. By mid-June of this summer, I was up to 160, and now I'm back down to 155. (I'm about 5' 7.5") I wear size 8-12 jeans and shorts at American Eagle (some I can wear an 8, but most of them are 10s. I wear shorts and capris in 12.) I'm looking to get back down to 140, and maybe even to 135 before Junior year is over.

I have a 50 minute yoga DVD that I plan on doing everyday, and my mom and I are searching for a new dance studio in our town that I can take classes at again starting in the fall.

What other exercise do you think would help and what diet plan would you recommend for me?

Best answer:
It's good to mix things up. I know I do. You might get bored doing the same dvd everyday. You should try Pilate's too. I love doing both. Buy a couple dvds (a mixture so you don't get bored). It's important to get some cardio (ex. walking, running/jogging, swimming, dancing) also. Also, if you have a membership at the gym, you might enjoy taking some classes.
As far as diet goes, it's hard to plan for someone because you don't know what foods they like (or food allergies!). You can probably go to the Food Pyramid website or google it or use some search engine and type, "how many calories should I get" I used this one website (below link) and to lose one pound a week, you can eat 1,546 calories a day.
But if you would like an example, this is what I'm doing... at the moment. My plan changes every week (sometimes every couple days lol). My exercise routine and the things I eat change depending if I am getting bored with it.

Breakfast options: (anywhere from 6 am to 7 am)
*granola bar
*dry cereal
***exercise: yoga for 15 minutes (like 6:15 or 7:15...whenvever I get up)

Lunch options: (changes; it's been a later lunch like 3 ish; I'm in Tennesse on vacation and been pretty busy)
*veggie burger or
*soup and a slice of bread or
*salad or
*pasta or
* pbj (my fav) with either an apple (I like apple juice or apple sauce better) or banana
***exercise: yoga for 15 minutes at around 4 pm ish

Snack options (around 4:30-5:30):
*apple (don't really like apples, so I just have juice or apple sauce) or
*grapes (once again, I just like grape juice or
* peas or
* something! something small and healthy of course!

Dinner options (time changes, but I don't like to eat too late):
* whatever there is for dinner or
* veggie burger or
* soup or
* lasagna or
* quiche.....just find something healthy! :)
***exercise: another 15 minutes of yoga at 9 pm
*** and somewhere in the day I like to run (or walk) which takes me anywhere from 10-15 minutes. No running on Saturdays or Sundays.

Yoga – Tips for those taking their first class

Article by Brian Goodwin

Yoga is a series of postures or positions which are held for a period of time while doing breathing exercises or meditations. It has become increasingly popular over the last two decades as form of fitness and stress release. It is said to calm your body and mind to help achieve balance.

For those new to yoga it can all seem a little bit mysterious, serious and overwhelming. Attending your first class can be stressful if you do not know what to expect. Below I have compiled a list of straightforward tips for attending your first yoga class.

Most gyms now have regular yoga classes for various levels. Rather than signing up to an expensive private yoga school right off the bat I would recommend starting with a beginner class to see if yoga is for you. Some people prefer their exercise a little more vigorous, but some people quickly take to yoga, it is best to test it out before forking out for private lessons. The classes at a dedicated yoga school will be better and are often tailored to different levels and styles.

Your yoga teacher can seriously impact your yoga experience. You should look around and find a teacher you like. If you are spending the whole class thinking about your teacher's annoying voice or unusual nose whistle you are not going to leave the class feeling centered or relaxed. It is thought the relationship between yoga instructor and student is the most important part of yoga.

It is best to wait four to five hours after eating before you go to a yoga class. While your food is digesting there are a lot of gasses inside you. Yoga works to release those gases. If you have just eaten you are going to fart in class. The postures put pressure on your stomach and massage your internal organs. Food = Farts. Many yoga classes have been witness to almighty explosions of gases. Save yourself the embarrassment, put off eating till after class and definitely do not go to yoga in the morning if you had fried food the night before, it is asking for yoga humiliation.

It is common for beginner classes to be interrupted by fits of giggles. This is why it is best to start out in a beginner class. Yoga instructors often tell you to center your anus or focus on rectum or even do the downward dog. It's funny the first hundred times. Get all of your giggling out of the way in beginner classes with everyone else. Serious yoga practitioners don't find the anus a laughing matter.

If you are over 50, out of shape, have a preexisting medical condition or you are pregnant be sure to consult a doctor and your yoga instructor. This is when private classes come in handy. If you have specific health needs a private instructor can tailor a session specifically for you and can help to improve your postures. There are classes specifically for people over 40 and for pregnant women so look around for the right class for you.
