When I put any sort of heavy pressure against the palm of my left hand I get intense pain. Why is this?
Question by Logan: When I put any sort of heavy pressure against the palm of my left hand I get intense pain. Why is this?
Every time I start doing push ups or bench pressing weights, the palm of my left hand gets an intense pain inside of it and I can't stand to put any pressure on it for hours or sometimes days. It's been known to happen even when I prop myself up in bed using my left hand (though I'm not over-weight lol). I had assumed there was nothing I could do about it, as I've spent many years playing sports and lifting weights; I figured I just permanently weakened my palm somehow.
However, I found a post from a previous Yahoo! question from 2 years ago that said...
"It's all in your tendons and how they are not used to the unusual way they are being used that they are not used to. Put that hand palm up in front of you and have your hand half closed. Slip your fingers of your other hand under this one so you can place your thumb right behind your wrist. Press down hard into your wrist and hold tight. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale. After 30 seconds slowly open your hand up and fingers up all the way as far as they will go and hold. Then release the pressure but hold your hand like that for one minute."
As soon as I did this, I felt a pop in my hand and the pain instantly went away. What's up with that? What does this exercise accomplish? Is there any way to warm up my palm tendons more properly so the pain never occurs?
My wife and I just started the p90x workout videos and I want to be able to do the push ups and the yoga without excruciating pain lol.

The bone popping would lead me to believe that there was something wrong with the way the bone was settled in your wrist and hand. I would suggest seeing a chiropractor or hand specialist for more accurate diagnosis though. I had a similar problem when I started a more physically demanding job and it went away with time, my body just needed to get used to the stress and strength needed to do the new job. An expert may be able to suggest a amount of time to lay off it, or even exercises and stretches to help alleviate the pain.
