Question by Pixie: Nerve pain and hamstring inflexibility?
I'm pretty young, and in good shape, but I have pains in the back of my legs when I try to stretch my hamstrings. I've been exercising about 3-6 time per week for the past seven years (running, weight lifting), and I have been taking yoga 2-3 times per week for the past four years. Still, I get horrible pains though the back of my leg when trying to stretch. I am so frustrated, and the pain is getting worse. My flexibility is becoming very poor due to it.
My physical therapist/chiropractor said this was nerve pain. It is definitely NOT the pain associated with over-stretching a muscle. In fact, I'm not sure that I've ever been able to bend far enough to actually stretch my hamstring because of the shooting pain that travels from my low back to my feet. Also, my toes start going numb when I try to stretch and the back of my knee hurts. She indicated this would start to lessen the more I worked out, but the opposite is happening! I can also feel all the tendons, ligaments, and muscles rolling over each other when I'm attempting to stretch my legs. I'm sure that's not normal.
I have tried all kinds of stretching, massage, and strengthening techniques... does anyone else have this? How can I get rid of it? I cannot even sit on the floor anymore and put my legs out in front of me. I have to bend them almost to a 90* angle!
Please help.
Yes, I have already told the doc about this, and was referred to a PT. Been going regularly for about 2 years for various injuries.
Best answer:
It sounds like your injury goes further then a sore muscle. I think the best thing to do is to see a doctor and ask if physical therapy will help solve the pain in your legs. If you are unwilling or do not want to do this then i recommend you rest your muscles for a while and take a break, stretch and soak them in cold and hot water every night, and make sure you eat healthy.
