P90X

Article by jekky

HistoryP90X is the current incarnation of several generations of interval training programs developed by Tony Horton with the Beachbody home fitness company. In 1998, Horton helped create his first home exercise product, called Great Body Guaranteed, as well as the original Power 90 interval and circuit-training home workout videos. The formula, marketed via infomercials and other broadcast media, began selling well, and in 2004 Horton debuted his "extreme" version.P90X was created to perfect the ideas started in the original Power 90, with new and more intense exercise routines. Horton honed the program in his Santa Monica, California workout studio, eventually using successful graduates from his classes when shooting the final workout videos. In total, Horton has created four different 90-day programs associated with the Power 90 name: Power 90, Power 90 Master Series, P90X, and most recently P90X Plus, which is sold to P90X graduates wishing to push themselves even further. P90X continues to be Beachbody's best-selling product after years of positive word of mouth and heavy infomercial advertisements. In April 2008, P90X became the best-selling infomercial of any type in the United States. Program overviewP90X is an intensive 90-day home fitness program that combines a variety of exercise styles, including strength training, cardio, and stretching. The system also stresses overall fitness by including bodyweight exercises such as pull-ups and push-ups, as well as plyometrics (jump training), yoga, and kenp. Most of the workouts are just under an hour in length, and feature Tony Horton as instructor and motivational leader along with 3 or 4 fellow exercisers as backup. For workouts that require weights, one of the backup exercisers will generally demonstrate the exercise using the alternative resistance bands. The backup exercisers also demonstrate some moves at lower levels of intensity for participants who aren't as fit. With the exception of the Ab Ripper X routine, each workout generally begins with about 10 minutes of stretching (static and ballistic) and warm-up and ends with stretching and cool-down of 35 minutes. Exercise breakdownThe "classic" version of the program requires 13 weeks of 6-day workouts with an optional stretch on the seventh day. On most of the weeks, Days 1, 3, and 5 of the workout are strength-training for various parts of the body including biceps, triceps, shoulders, back, and legs. On these days, a 16-minute abs session is included after the regular workouts. Days 2, 4, and 6 are for the cardio-related exercises: plyometrics, yoga, and kenp, respectively. The program begins with three weeks of the same six days of exercises repeated every week. Weeks 5 through 7 are similar to weeks 1 through 3 except that some of the strength training routines are different. Weeks 9-12 then alternate between the exercises from weeks 1-3 and 5-7. Weeks 4, 8, and 13 are designated "rest" weeks, which don't include strength training but instead consist entirely of the cardio-related exercises along with core synergistics and stretching.ExerciseWeekMuscles WorkedTypeAb Ripper XChest and Back1-3, 9, 11Pectorals, Back, BicepsStrength TrainingYesPlyometrics1-3, 5-7, 9-12Legs, Full BodyCardioNoShoulders and Arms1-3, 9, 11Biceps, Triceps, ShouldersStrength TrainingYesYoga X1-13Full BodyStretchNoLegs and Back1-3, 5-7, 9-12Quads, Hamstring, Calves, BackStrength TrainingYesKenp X1-13Full BodyCardioNoX Stretch1-13Full BodyStretchNoCore Synergistics4, 8, 13Full BodyStrength TrainingNoChest, Shoulders And Triceps5-7, 10, 12Pectorals, Shoulders, TricepsStrength TrainingYesBack and Biceps5-7, 10, 12Back, BicepsStrength TrainingYesCardio XOptionalFull BodyCardioNoAb Ripper XOptionalAbdominalsStrength TrainingN/A VariationsThe program can be modified into a "lean" version aimed primarily at fat loss, which substitutes extra cardio for some of the strength training. Participants can also do an even more strenuous "doubles" version, aimed at athletes looking to get back into competitive shape, by combining the classic P90X workout plan with an extra Cardio X session starting in phase two during each strength-training day. NutritionThe nutrition plan is broken into three separate 30-day phases intended to work in conjunction to the exercise plan. Generally, the first 30 days emphasizes higher protein and lower carbohydrates with restricted calories. The second phase aims for moderate caloric intake with balanced proteins and carbohydrates, while the third phase uses higher amounts of calories and more carbohydrates, in order to give the body enough quick energy to keep up with the final rigors of the program.A post-exercise drink is also recommended after each workout to help the body recover more efficiently. The P90X recovery formula contains 4 parts carbohydrates to 1 part whey protein, which sports nutritionists consider the ideal ratio for muscle growth and increased endurance, along with L-Glutamine, L-Arginine and creatine supplements. EquipmentStandard home gym equipment that can be used with P90X: Yoga blocks, yoga mat, dumbbells, pull-up/push-up bar, push-up handles, gloves, and chairThe workout routines come on 12 DVDs. Since the program is done at home, the user needs to have dumbbells (usually 15s, 20s, and 25s) and a pull-up bar, or else a resistance band, for strength training exercises, along with a sturdy chair. Optional equipment includes a yoga mat for the abdominal and yoga portions, push-up handles (which increase the range of push-ups and put less stress on the wrists), and a heart rate monitor for the cardio workouts. Usage and receptionSince its introduction, P90X has become a "household name in the world of fitness" used by a reported 2 million people. On sites such as YouTube, participants have posted thousands of home videos charting their progress. Several film and music stars, including Sheryl Crow, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, and Pink, have mentioned that they've used the P90X program to get in shape. Members of Congress have also said in press interviews that they're doing the workouts on a regular basis. And professional athletes such as Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics, Matt Diaz and Martn Prado of the Atlanta Braves, David Garrard of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and David Akers of the Philadelphia Eagles have cited the program as part of their training regimen. In 2008, Beachbody announced that it would pay million to Akers' favorite charity if he broke the 63-yard field goal record in the next season after using the program.Several universities in the United States have either implemented the program as a workout class, as at the University of Illinois Springfield, or made the DVDs available for borrowing, as at Duke and Harvard. There have also been press reports of police departments, fire departments and Coast Guard units around the country using P90X to get their officers and firefighters into optimal shape. P90X workouts have also become popular with members of Congress, including Kevin Brady, Paul Ryan, Heath Shuler, Kevin McCarthy, Eric Cantor, and Richard Burr. As a result, Horton travels to Washington, D.C., to lead live training sessions for the House and Senate several times a year.
