An At-Home Mindfulness Meditation Retreat
Article by J. Carolus
Many of us dream of going to a mediation retreat to escape our lives which seem to have increased in stress recently. The problem is, sleep-away-camp-style retreats can be costly.
Here, I propose a version of your own mindful mediation retreat.
First, plan your personal retreat at home. How long will it be? Hours? Days? What items do you have on hand to support your "get-away"? What items would you like to have?
While it is easier financially to treat yourself a new zafu pillow than an entire weekend or week away, remember, you don't really require anything of a material nature to practice mindful meditation. All supporting items are just icing on the cake, so to speak.
The very nature of word "retreat" means to go away, to be separate. So, for your own personal retreat away from every day life, you will have to be alone in your room or living space.
Children or significant others are not allowed unless they meditate with you. Pets may also need a spot away from your pre-determined mediation area (just don't forget to let them out of their tucked-away place when you are through meditating!)
Next, spas, meditation and yoga retreats tend to offer vegetarian-based fresh and in-season food. Accordingly, plan and prep your meal in advance: try a new vegetarian recipe out just for yourself! Prepare a tapas or salad ahead of time, with a serving of fresh fruit and chilled lemon water.
Then, your pre-determined area needs to be prepared. Spas and retreats tend to be very clean and very minimalist. Accordingly, you should clear your meditation area of any clutter, then dust and mop.
Try to remove items that represent un-finished projects so that they won't distract you from your spa day.
Spread out: fold a blanket or two near your zafu, arrange for your Tibetan singing bowl to be near by, and light some incense and candles. If you are in a place that does not allow candles, remember that they are now available in a battery form from craft stores for a similar effect.
All set? Now, you are ready for your meditation "retreat"! It can be for one hour or longer. For a short version, I would recommend a mindfulness meditation followed by your prepared "spa" lunch and a relaxing shower. For a longer version, feel free to incorporate turning off your phone and burying it someplace, setting aside three, pre-made (by you) "spa" type meals. Leave yourself enough time to prepare and clean up, read books or excerpts on Buddhist principals or one of the Gita translations. Pre-set some white, fluffy towels and a new pair of slippers. Do yoga upon waking and before you go to bed. Play relaxing music.
Mindfulness meditation is primarily about relaxing the mind by increasing mindful awareness. By centering your self every so often with time "away", you should begin to notice small changes in the way you feel and relate to the world around you.
Namaste
