Safety Precautions on Yoga before you Begin

Before you begin your Yoga journey you need to ensure you are fully aware of the dangers and health risks involved. That means following proper safety precautions and knowing your limits. It is recommended that people suffering from any of the following should not attempt Yoga without the right professional supervision:

• Cancer or Benign Tumors• Eye problems such as detached retina• Diabetes• Epilepsy• Heart Disease• High Blood Pressure• HIV/AIDS• Meniere's disease• MS (Multiple Sclerosis)• Myalgic Encephalomyelitis• Physical handicaps or disabilities• Post Operative conditions

It is also strongly advised that pregnant women do not undertake any Yoga until the baby is born. There are also general safety precautions to observe before you being any Yoga session. Make sure you empty your bowels and bladder before you begin any Yoga session and wait 4-5 hours after a meal before doing any Asanas. Additionally, if you have any light snacks you still need to wait 2-3 hours before practicing Yoga. Remove hard contact lenses before you begin.

What Should I Wear?You can wear whatever you want to your Yoga session whether you are at home or at a fitness club. You should make sure it is loose and comfortable to wear so that it allows you to move freely during your Yoga session and take your shoes and socks off before you begin.

What Area Should I Use?You can practice Yoga where you like so long as it is spacious and comfortable. Make sure you aren't going to get interrupted by family members pushing past you; you need to ensure you can stay in your poses without interruption. A non-slip floor is ideal but if you don't have one invest in a non-slip mat for standing postures. Some Asanas require you to make use of a ledge or wall in order to complete them so it's a good idea to make sure you have these readily available nearby.

How Long Should A Session Last?It's not dangerous or unhealthy to only practice Yoga for 10 minutes at a time. Sometimes it's very necessary to have only short bursts of Yoga every so often because our busy lifestyles don't give us much time for luxuries.

How Can I Prepare my Tools?It's very important to prepare your tools properly before you begin. Make sure you fold your towels carefully and properly or it may interrupt your Yoga session later on. You should also make sure there is enough room and no debris lying around when you want to lie down or use tools such as walls and ledges. You should also check other tools like stools and tables beforehand for weak legs or a weak top as some postures require you to put your full body weight on these items.

When Should I Stop a Posture?You don't have to wait until the given time to release a posture. If you feel any discomfort, pain or are simply unable to hold the posture any longer release it immediately and either rest if required or move on. Start off with simple easy to follow postures if you are a beginner.
