Yoga Therapy

Article by Iris0326

Yoga therapy is a systematic and individual oriented therapeutic process, which treats the individual as a whole and is not a disease oriented therapeutic methodology. The goal of the therapy is to harmonize both the internal and the external environments of the individual, so that the growth and integration of the personality become possible.

Yoga therapy is the application of the science of yoga to enhance health and wellness. All three levels of the whole person are taken into consideration: body, mind, and spirit. Anyone going through a life change, or a transition, can benefit from this therapy as it is much more than a yoga prescription for yoga exercises.

This therapy recognizes that the body and mind will be balanced when an individual experiences a sense of oneness within. This is considered an awakening to the spiritual dimensions of life, and the key to health and healing. When body and mind imbalances manifest as a health condition, this is seen as a signal on life's healing path that there is disconnect with some level of our being.

Yoga philosophy and psychology form the basis of Yoga Therapy and state that lack of knowledge of the true Self is the source of all disease and illness. Even though symptoms are alleviated or have gone, health and healing is still possible at deeper levels of being.

Where will Yoga therapy go in the future? It is only a matter of time for yoga to be integrated into standard medical therapies. Being cost efficient, and without negative side effects, has made a very strong case for proponents of the therapy. As studies continue to reveal the results of a holistic and pro-active approach to health, standard medicine will evolve.
